It’s March 30th, 2020.

We acknowledge that there is a deadly virus that is sweeping across the world and in our nation. We must be vigilant, responsible, and careful not just for ourselves but for our fellow man.

This being said, we are a nation of laws, first of which would be the first amendment to the Constitution of the United States.

The First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States states:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

There have been several instances this week where our enforcement of “safe-at-home” protocols in our localities seemingly infringe upon our constitutional rights.

Churches have been shuttered with threat of permanent closure. Pastors have been arrested and fined for practicing their right of assembly while following protocols instituted by the local governments.

Have we gone too far? Are we moving in a direction that is familiar to those who have escaped communist oppression?

Host Michael O’Fallon explores the consequences of giving up our individual autonomy in today’s episode of The Causes of Things.
